More than a third of all the heat loss in an un-insulated home is lost through the walls. Modern houses are usually built with cavity walls which can be insulated but most pre-war homes were built with solid walls which let the heat flood out. Solid walls lose twice as much heat as cavity walls, even cavity walls without insulation!
Why insulate your solid walls?
Insulating your solid walls with Marmox board is an effective way to stop wasting energy and money at home. In winter, a well insulated house keeps warmth exactly where you need it – indoors. What could you save?
The Energy Saving Trust is a non-departmental public body monitoring and advising the UK government on energy use, conservation and climate change. Marmox Board is an ENERGY SAVING TRUST RECOMMENDED PRODUCT and the E.S.T has estimated that insulating all the external solid walls of a house would save approximately 1.8 tonnes of CO2 per year. This equates to approximately a £365 reduction in heating bills (estimated figures based on insulating a gas-heated, semi-detached home with three bedrooms).
Why use Marmox Multiboard dry-lining insulation?
Marmox Multiboard dry-lining insulation is made from polystyrene foam with a coating of glass fibre mesh embedded in a polymer-cement mortar. It is completely free of CFCs, HCFs and asbestos, making it safe for use in nearly any environment.
As well as its waterproofing and thermal insulating properties, Marmox Multiboard dry-lining insulation also provides strong load-bearing capabilities, up to 30 tonnes per metre squared, and it is completely unaffected by freezing and thaw cycles.

Choosing the right Marmox Board dry-lining insulation

There's also a curved dry-lining insulation board that is extremely flexible and ideal for use in bathroom constructions. It's also perfect for covering architectural features, such as columns and arches. Additionally, the curved dry-lining insulation board can speed up installation, saving both valuable time and money.
The range of Marmox Multiboard dry-lining insulation systems also includes angled boards and pipe boxes, which simplify the boxing-in of exposed pipe work in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and lofts.

If your home has solid walls, then it should be suitable for internal insulation. Solid walls are mainly made of brick or stone and are found in most houses built before 1930. The easiest way to tell is from the pattern of the bricks on the outside of your house.
If your home has solid walls, the bricks will tend to be placed head-on and lengthways in an alternating pattern like this.
If your home has cavity walls, the bricks will tend to have a regular pattern like this.
However, an installer will be able to tell you whether you have solid walls or not.
Solid wall insulation can also work for properties with cavity walls that are not suitable for cavity wall insulation and other non-traditional housing types.
How to Install Marmox Dry lining
The great advantage of Marmox Multiboard is their weight. A 10mm board weighs just over 2.5kg and a 20mm board just 3kg so they can be transported and fitted by just one person.
The thicker the board, the better the thermal insulation will be however in most situations our 60mm thick board would be impractical because that would take up too much space and block your windows! The most popular thicknesses are 20mm and 30mm and because it’s relatively thin, 10mm on reveals.
Plasterboard adhesive is NOT suitable – tile adhesive should be used.
METHOD 1 - CONTINUOUS BED
If fitting to a flat and exposed brick, block, concrete or plastered wall, any size board can be fixed using a continuous bed of tile adhesive. Not having any air gap between the board and the wall is marginally preferable since it eliminates the slight risk of interstitial condensation.
METHOD 2 - DOT AND DAB
If a wall is uneven, has a crumbly surface or is of a material that is not suitable for to bond with tile adhesive, Marmox Multiboards are fixed using either Marmox dowel fixings / screws and Marmox washers supported with dabs of tile adhesive. Board thickness should be at least 12.5mm if using this method.
It is recommended that for dotting and dabbing, at least 15 fixing points per long board and 9 fixing points per short board should be used. All the edges must be secure and exhibit no movement.
METHOD 3 - STUD WALL
Boards can be fitted directly to timber or metal studwork in accordance with the main fitting instructions which state that screws and washers need to be used every 30cm along each member. If using 20mm or thicker the centres can be at 600mm whereas if 12.5mm is being used centres should be at 450mm.
In methods 2 and 3, consideration should be given to whether there is any dampness in the solid wall. If there is, leaving a gap is not recommended as it could accentuate the condensation problem already existing. When the wall is not absolutey dry, the board should be fitted using the continuous bed of adhesive method. Obviously if dampness is a significant, this must be addressed before masking the problem because Marmox is not a cure for a damp wall.
A Useful tip: if a thin coating of finishing plaster only is to be applied, it should be appreciated that the thickness of the plastic and metal washers is 1mm whereas the fixing dowels are 4mm so more plaster would be required if using dowels.
Other Benefits of Marmox Dry Lining
The waterproof core of the Marmox Multiboard has a thermal conductivity of between 0.028 to 0.034 W/mK. The material is fire resistant extruded polystyrene which is the most effective thermal insulation material possible to be made into thin, rigid insulation boards.
Marmox dry lining reduces the temperature gradient between the outside of the wall to the inside and will therefore reduce condensation. Although insulation is important, it should never be assumed that condensation and mould growth can be controlled by insulation alone, ventilation must always be considered. Whether there is any damp inherent in the wall must also be determined before carrying out any dry-lining. If there is a problem with water ingress, this must be stopped before fitting the Marmox as ‘interstitial’ condensation may occur if not attended to. Alternatively, for damp areas such as basements, specialist polyethylene cavity drain membranes can be used. Professional advice must be sought in these circumstances.
