Award nomination for college with under floor heating
An Essex college that features under floor heating that draws warmth from the grounds of its playing fields is in line for an award.
Futures Community College in Southchurch Boulevard, Southend, is on the shortlist for the community benefit category of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' awards, local newspaper the Echo reports.
It measures around 818 sq ft and, according to Nigel Franking of HBW Partnership - the project's surveyors - "has a number of outstanding features".
"There are thousands of metres of pipework under the playing fields, to collect heat from the ground and provide under floor heating in the college," he was quoted by the news source as saying.
The building, which opened in September 2010, is used by students studying topics as diverse as hair and beauty and construction.
Kate Hilpern of the Independent recently spoke of the benefits of under floor heating, saying the technology is a good alternative to radiators.
