Ely: Efficiency boost expected to save residents up to £460 a year

More than 120 residences in New Barns Avenue, Ely, have been fitted out with solid wall insulation to improve their energy efficiency and update their appearance.

The properties, which are part of a Sanctuary Group-owned social housing development, were first fitted with external wall insulation before being given a colour rendered finish. In addition, loft insulation was topped up as required and a number of boilers were replaced or upgraded with energy efficient models.

The works should help residents to reduce their winter fuel bills - with potential savings up to £460 a year - while keeping the homes at a comfortable temperature. It has also been estimated that the work could reduce a typical semi-detached property's CO2 emissions by 1,900 kg.

Commenting on the project, Kayleigh Maguire, energy officer at East Cambridgeshire District Council, explained that the refurbishment works would make a big difference to residents. "[They] can now see savings of hundreds of pounds on their energy bills as a result of having solid wall insulation fitted and we hope they are enjoying the benefits," she said.

The refurbishment was funded by Sanctuary, and supported by East Cambridgeshire District Council. The council has also been running a solid wall insulation scheme, offering grants of up to £6,000 per property for homeowners.

Mark Ashburn, senior asset services surveyor for Sanctuary, said he was "delighted" with the finished result, noting that the refreshed appearance of the properties had changed the overall feel of the estate.

"The changes made to these homes at New Barns Avenue are part of our on-going commitment to create environmental value, by investing in the improvement of our existing properties," he said.

“By focusing on insulation measures we help cut residents' fuel bills whilst reducing carbon emissions and providing affordable warmth," he added.

Jackie Blair, a resident whose home was involved in the refurbishment project, said the external wall insulation had made a huge difference to her home.

"Not only does the house look better than before but we are now really feeling the benefits of the savings on our energy bills," she said.
