Energy efficiency 'important to prevent people going without heat'

Homeowners may want to consider installing thermal insulation after one expert described the importance of making a property more energy efficient.

A study by price comparison service found that 61 per cent of households are concerned about the price of their fuel bills.

Due to the high costs of warming a home, 17 per cent of people went without adequate heating last winter, it was reported.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at the organisation, said of the findings: "It is vital that the right balance is achieved between being energy efficient and being energy deficient - the idea of people going without energy … has got to set alarm bells ringing."

Rather than sacrifice being warm, Ms Robinson encouraged individuals to speak to their supplier to find out what help they could get in making their home more efficient.

Introduced in 2008, the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target obliges energy companies to contribute towards reducing the amount of CO2 produced by properties.
