More people 'switching to smaller energy firms'

An independent energy supplier has claimed more people are switching to smaller firms for their gas and electricity.

Since prices at the Big Six companies went up last year, Economy Energy states that it has seen a 45 per cent growth in its customer base.

An enquiry into the larger firms has begun after regulator Ofgem found that certain companies may have correlated with each other to fix prices and stifle competition.

Paul Berridge, marketing and sales compliance manager at Economy Energy, said: "Households and businesses across the UK are struggling to keep on top of energy bill payments and smaller companies, like ourselves, can provide a much cheaper alternative."

One of the Big Six, SSE, recently announced it would be freezing prices for the next 18 months, while Ed Miliband has pledged to force the others to follow suit if Labour wins at the next election.

SEE revealed it would cut 500 jobs as a result.
