New campaign hopes to 'champion' energy issues
Highlighting the benefits of becoming more energy efficient to the UK public is the aim of a new initiative being launched by a group of businesses and charities.
The Big Energy Vision project is backed by big names including John Lewis, Kingfisher, uSwitch, the UK Green Building Council and Citizens Advice - and it is hoped more firms and non-governmental organisations can be convinced to join the cause.
A multi-platform campaign will form the basis of an engagement strategy, with social media, best practice guides, telephone helplines and advertising all being deployed to offer clear information on how technology and a change in behaviour can make a significant difference to a household's energy consumption and - as a result - its utility bills.
The launch of the campaign coincides with Big Energy Week, which runs between October 20th and 24th.
Meanwhile a recent YouGov poll found energy bills were considered to be the "most worrying cost" of all domestic outgoings, with 32 per cent of 2,000 respondents listing it as their number one concern.
However, two-thirds of people stated there was "not very much" or "nothing at all" they could do to reduce how much they were spending on their gas and electricity, which highlights how a large proportion of the population are missing out on opportunities to save money by not being more aware of how to be energy efficient.
"We need to move from a place where people are frustrated about their bills and feel there's nothing they can do, to one where they feel that help is available to stop wasting energy and control their bills," said Kingfisher chief executive Sir Ian Cheshire.
He added Big Energy Vision is a "bold" initiative, but that he hoped it could make a difference.
As well as educating people on investing in more energy-efficient appliances, the campaign will focus on the benefits of retrofitting properties with improvements like solid and cavity wall insulation to bring heating bills down.
