Ovo Energy to help communities get cheaper energy
Independent energy supplier Ovo Energy has launched a new scheme with the aim of encouraging local bodies to provide members of the public with cheaper gas and electricity.
Launched today (April 28th), the initiative will involve the company asking councils and community groups to restore trust among consumers who have lost faith with the prices and practices of the UK's largest providers.
Stephen Fitzpatrick, founder and managing director of Ovo, said the company had invested in systems that can be scaled up to give local bodies the required tools to operate a utility business.
Through the new Ovo Communities division, the firm is set to offer power purchasing, energy efficiency installations and smart metering to local authorities.
Mr Fitzpatrick told the Guardian: "One of the great myths of today's energy industry is that we need big, centralised energy companies to keep the lights on … Now we want to share our knowledge and expertise to encourage others to follow our lead."
