York council warns about heating insulation salesmen
People in north Yorkshire have been warned about bogus salesmen offering heating insulation.
The City of York Council's Trading Standards body described how the scam artists are claiming to provide free loft insulation to residents.
Those interested in having their attic space lagged are advised to check out companies online before agreeing to have any work carried out or contact the Energy Saving Trust (EST).
Matt Boxall, City of York Council's Trading Standards manager, said: "Whatever your situation, it always pays to thoroughly research any company offering a grant."
Door-to-door callers are believed to be visiting homes in the area and claiming funding is available for heating insulation.
However, Mr Boxall explained that while some households are entitled to allowances, any work should be organised directly with the grant-making body.
The EST provides an online tool that can help people discover whether they are entitled to free insulation by entering their postcode.
