What Are Tile Backer Boards?

Tile backer boards used in a wet room

Tile backer boards are a pre-made panel commonly used on both walls and floors to provide a sturdy foundation for tile installation. Their flat, even surface can bear significantly more weight (up to 200kg per m2) than a typical plastered wall.

Backer boards are frequently utilised in damp environments, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and showers, as well as for outdoor purposes. They provide a reliable and waterproof base to safeguard tiles from harm and potential moisture problems.

Tile backer boards come in various sizes, ranging from 4-50mm thick. Additionally, certain boards also possess insulation and soundproofing capabilities. The favoured option among these backer boards is cement backer board, a combination of cement, sand, and reinforced with fibreglass.

Waterproof cement backer board is the top choice for tiling in areas with direct water exposure, such as showers, bathrooms, and wet rooms. Additional options for backer boards include fibre cement, glass mat gypsum, water-resistant drywall, and foam-based tile boards.
