Britain has one the best energy production sectors

The UK has one of the best systems for producing energy in the world.

This is according to the World Energy Council, which puts the country level with the likes of Denmark, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, each of which have a AAA energy rating.

Such a rating is awarded as a result of the nation's ability to handle what is known as 'trilemma'. This is made up of energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability.

Despite its high ranking, the World Energy Council said that the UK still needs to attract a greater level of private investment to ensure low carbon energy targets are met.

Joan MacNaughton, executive chair of the body, said: "For its part, the private sector needs to better understand how policy is made and how to contribute to it more effectively."

Friends of the Earth has recently criticised prime minister David Cameron over his failure to make any energy promises beyond the 2015 general election.
