Marmox Fireboard Specified for Bromley High Street Redevelopment

Project overview

The redevelopment of a landmark 1930s Art Deco building on Bromley High Street is making use of Marmox Fireboard as part of its refurbishment strategy.

The former Laura Ashley store at 54–62 High Street is being transformed into a mixed-use development, creating new commercial and retail space alongside 33 apartments.

Designed by Oaten Architects, the scheme retains the building's original brickwork and stone elevations while incorporating an upward extension to support the redevelopment.

The challenge

With the existing façade being retained and new accommodation introduced, the project required suitable materials to meet the specified fire safety requirements while supporting the building's thermal performance.

The window reveals required a suitable non-combustible backing board, ready to receive an external render finish.

The Marmox solution

A total of 100 sheets of 20mm Marmox Fireboard were sourced from Wray-Tech Supplies Ltd in Chelmsford for installation across the window reveals.

Marmox Fireboard combines a stone wool core with a reinforced, polymer-modified cementitious honeycomb surface, providing a non-combustible backing board for specified render and plaster applications.

Available in 600 x 1200mm sheets and in thicknesses of 12mm, 20mm, 50mm and 100mm, Fireboard offers options for a range of construction and refurbishment applications.

Installation

Earl Green's operatives are cutting and fixing the boards across the window reveals, ready for rendering.

Ruben Matyas, Director at Earl Green, commented:

“We have used the Marmox Fireboard successfully on a couple of past projects and it was specified here by the architect for its Class A1 rating. It is straightforward to cut and we are fixing it by screwing into metal stud or the use of special fire-resistant adhesive.”

Product in practice

Matt, Sales Manager at Wray-Tech Supplies Ltd, said:

“We are seeing increasing sales of Fireboard as an ideal backer board for render or plasterwork, which we buy direct from Marmox. While we have sold some quantities of the 50 and 100mm thick versions, the 20mm option is definitely the most popular with small builders as well as larger clients such as Earl Green.”
