Big businesses need help cutting energy costs
A report by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Northern Ireland has stated that big businesses need help reducing their energy costs.
Large companies in the region currently pay more than all but one other European country in electricity bills, according to the BBC.
This is due to the way in which network costs are apportioned between the companies and other users.
The report claims that this is affecting businesses and their plans for expansion, while also potentially negatively affecting job security.
However, the MLAs added that they will not support any measures that would harm the general consumer base in Northern Ireland.
The report said: "Northern Ireland has amongst the highest rates of fuel poverty in the UK and the committee would not support any changes which could result in an increase in this level."
A number of recommendations were given by the MLAs, including greater transparency on costs of generated electricity.
